Apple Butter

Ingredients

  • 12-14 Sweet-tart apples Winesap
  • 2 Cups Apple cider

Optional to taste

  • Sugar
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Ground clove
  • All spice

Instructions

  • Don’t peel, but wash, core, and quarter apples.
  • Put in crockpot. Stir in cider.
  • Cover and cook on low for 10–18 hours (or high for 2–4 hours).
  • Put soft fruit in food mill to remove skins.
  • Place back into crockpot. Taste the apple mixture. If the mixture needs sweetness add sugar. Add additional seasonings to your likings.
  • Cook on high with lid ajar. You'll want to cook down the apples until they reach the consistency you like.
  • Pack hot apple butter into hot jars, leaving ¼ inch headspace.
  • Process 15 minutes in boiling water canner. Add 10 minutes to processing time at 5000 feet elevation.
