Apple Butter
Ingredients
- 12-14 Sweet-tart apples Winesap
- 2 Cups Apple cider
Optional to taste
- Sugar
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground nutmeg
- Ground clove
- All spice
Instructions
- Don’t peel, but wash, core, and quarter apples.
- Put in crockpot. Stir in cider.
- Cover and cook on low for 10–18 hours (or high for 2–4 hours).
- Put soft fruit in food mill to remove skins.
- Place back into crockpot. Taste the apple mixture. If the mixture needs sweetness add sugar. Add additional seasonings to your likings.
- Cook on high with lid ajar. You'll want to cook down the apples until they reach the consistency you like.
- Pack hot apple butter into hot jars, leaving ¼ inch headspace.
- Process 15 minutes in boiling water canner. Add 10 minutes to processing time at 5000 feet elevation.
