Mamaw Best's Favorite Fudge

A popular recipe that mamas just loved. She only had fudge at Christmas time when Aunt Brenda would make and bring it to the family gathering.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups sugar
  • ¾ cup butter
  • cup evaporated milk
  • 20 oz semisweet chocolate morsels 1 package
  • 7 oz marshmallow creme 1 container
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (walnuts, peanuts, pecans, etc) optional

Instructions

  • Grease a 9x13-inch pan.
  • Mix sugar, margarine, and evaporated milk in a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Bring mixture to a full boil for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips until melted and thoroughly combined. Beat in marshmallow creme, nuts, and vanilla extract. Transfer fudge to the prepared pan and let cool before cutting into squares.

Notes

Mamaw didn't like nuts in her fudge because it hurt her gums and caused her diverticulitis to flare. She also didn't like walnuts at all because they caused her tongue to burn and welp up. I too have this problem with walnuts and certain restaurant salads. It's apparently either glossopyrosis or pollen food allergy syndrome (PFAS) also called oral allergy syndrome (OAS).
This recipe will make about 3lbs of fudge.
